God, Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens, Catherine Cameron
How amazing that a visionary like Robert Oppenheimer could mathematically know of the existence of a black hole in space, when it emits no visible light. Yet, as gifted as Oppenheimer was in understanding nuclear physics, this is contrasted against his lack of vision, or poor understanding in other areas, like human nature. He may have been more constrained by time, space, and the finite than many others. That was a takeaway after a recent viewing of the movie Oppenheimer.
An intriguing characteristic of a visionary is the ability to know, what others can't even imagine. Seeing the unseen, the infinite and not just the finite, make for a powerful vision; "for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal" (2Cor4:18). Catherine Cameron, was born the same year as Warren Rasmussen, 1927. She composed the text to "God, Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens". She was a visionary in hymnody.
During communion at a recent church service an elderly couple helped each other make their way to the table at the front of the church. The journey wasn't easy. Neither was steady on their feet, one was stooped over. But hands held together they confidently made it. In humble and feeble gratitude they received a miracle. In so doing they extended a miraculous vision to others.
"Miracles are a retelling in small letters of the very same story which is written across the whole world in letters too large for some of us to see"
C.S. Lewis
During the 1980 Olympics Al Michaels asked the question, "do you believe in miracles?" Olympic sportscasters have been trying to create and market the same belief before, and ever since. There's been some success, as the athletic feats of the Olympic participants are incredible. However, there is also the realization that such accomplishment often comes at a cost. As Oppenheimer's extraordinary talent in nuclear physics may have limited his experience and understanding in other aspects of life, so many Olympic athletes are challenged to keep their young lives in balance. There is both a shared joy and sadness with some of these outstanding but clearly finite accomplishments.
NBC, which has televised rights to the 2024 Olympics, must not think talented heralds of victory like Michaels are still good enough. Pheidippides has been replaced by Snoop Dogg in the NBC Olympics.
Ashley and Aaron spent much of the month of July in the Peruvian Andes. While not quite of Olympic scale, plans to climb and enjoy spectacular visions along the way and from 20K foot summits did require training and sacrifice. This included nights of sleeping a top mount Evans in Colorado for pre-climb acclimation. The three peaks to be summited were Artesonraju, Pisco, and Chopicalqui. Aaron summited all three. Ashley reached the top of Pisco and Chopicalqui. They had a good climbing guide named Darwin and a climbing cook named Cleaver. For each of the planned summits there was a base camp and then a high camp. The climbers would depart the high camp (which was 2 to 4K feet below the summit) for the final ascent around 10p the night before. It was reported that Darwin's heart rate remained in the 60s, even during some of the more strenuous sections of each climb. Pulse oximeter readings in the high 80s were common among this trio at each of the summits.
