US Presidents have a tradition of pardoning a turkey on Thanksgiving. It is also customary that pardons, or commutations, for federal crimes be compassionately tendered to the non-poultry as well. These pardons are often one of the last acts of an outgoing president. The last and first acts of US presidents from the November 2024 election through January 2025 set records for the number of pardons and new precedence. It was challenging to know who were the real turkeys in this flurry of forgiveness.
In a stellar exhibition of family values, Joe reneged and pardoned his ne'er-do-well son, Hunter. "Well pardon me for loving my son", would have been an expected response. But Joe, had to throw his own Justice Department under the electric bus, mindlessly validating Donald's claim of a politically biased justice system. Just before leaving office Joe supposedly pardoned most of the rest of his family. And, not wanting to constrain this pardon free-for-all to just his biological family, Joe issued pardons for his political family and friends including the renowned Dr. Fauci.
In the final weeks, Joe's administration once again tried to pardon (have taxpayers pay for) student loans. This of course was in the face of both Congress and Supreme Court admonitions and rulings to the contrary.
One can't be too hard on Joe. He likely doesn't remember what he signed and who he pardoned. Failing to pardon himself is another indication that he was a PINO (president in name only) for most of his term.
Did all of the prosecuted and convicted January 6ers deserve a full pardon? No, some pardons, some commutations, and some let the sentence stand actions would have been more in line with an embrace of a merit based actions. Joe's politically motivated justice system did 'throw the book' at most of arrested 6ers. In a few instances charges and sentences were blatantly 'trumped-up'. Even so, across the board pardons were inconsistent with merit. Some pardons and commutations with a promise to fairly and equally prosecute all US protesters of the current age would have made more sense. But legitamite compassion was overshadowed by selfish vindication.
Similar to Joe, Donald in essence pardoned Tik-Tok. This too was in the face of Congressional and Supreme Court actions.
If Donald had been on his game he would have issued pardons to Fani Willis, Letitia James, Alvin Bragg, Juan Merchan, Jack Smith and even Merrick Garland. Without their overzealous and politically motivated actions (law fare) Trump may not even have been the Republican nominee, much less the 47th president. Pardons have morphed into presidential paybacks.
The 2002 film Minority Report featured 'Pre-Cogs" who could foresee crimes before they were committed. This allowed future authorities to stop crimes before they happened, prosecute, and imprison the evil doers. Maybe Joe Biden enlisted some Pre-Cogs to learn that family and friends needed pardoning before they could be arrested, prosecuted and convicted. Joe's Pre-Cogs evidently weren't that good. He had to give blanket pardons for any crime reaching well into the past. What an awful precedent for this PINO to establish. The wailing of Democrats can be easily imagined when the Republicans again follow a Democratic Party precedence.
